It is nice looking, but I wouldn't pay a big premium for the toning. Reason being, I experimented with toning silver coins and found that this kind of color can be made quite easily. Caveat emptor.

True.. (few grand price at ebay... that is monstrous premium in that lol.. i mean.. it is essentially still a 1oz silver coin..)

I'm rather caught in between numismatics and bullion coins investing..

Having seen many numismatics coins.. many are cool to collect... but then... The premiums on them making its exit strategy rather more difficult.. need to find fellow numismastic lover to purchase..

compared to mainstream bullion coins like 1oz 999 pure silver maples, eagles, pandas, britannias etc.. easier to sell.. exit strategies somewhat faster than numismatics.. more buyers from bullion coins than numismatic ones..

For sale: $2000 LOL

I did the tone on this coin in a few hours. I could have masked concentric rings for more definition and it would have come out much like the coin the OP posted up.

I would pay 2 bucks over spot, break it out of the plastic, and dip it in eZest coin cleaner to get rid of that discoloration.

Not that I don't believe you could make it more realistic, but I just don't know that it wouldn't be evident that it was not natural. it almost looks like you used some sort of dye or ink on that coin.

Don't get me wrong, I think the markup people are trying to get is insane. I might pay a couple bucks more for the novelty... but hey, I guess a sucker is born every minute.

Edit: wow, ok, informative article here.

I'll add a couple more pictures, this time with less light picking up the bright colors, more representative of how it looks straight on. The coin has not had contact with anything - it has simply been in an environment that made it react quickly. This is a real gray area - for example, if I put a coin in the sun, or intentionally wrap it up in blue paper towel or tissue paper that will react with silver, has it been artificially toned? I know for a fact PCGS has graded artificially toned coins and not made any mention of it.

Eventually this coin will be submitted to a grading service, and that will be the conclusion of the experiment - whether or not the grader makes any mention of artificial color manipulation.

Edit - just to be crystal clear before someone inevitably accuses me of something - this coin will never be sold, whether it comes back slabbed or body bagged.
